Day 24 'Threatened, Endangered, Extinct'
North Island Kōkako, Callaeas wilsoni. They are slate-grey with wattles and have black masks. They belong to a family containing five species of New Zealand wattlebirds, South Island Kōkako, two species of tīeke (saddleback) and extinct huia.
Growing up, my grandparents had a taxidermy Kōkako in a bell jar in their lounge, which probably started my love for this ātaahua manu with its haunting song.
