Te Mata Peak is a peak south of Hastings rising up to 399m. The Sleeping Giant, the well-recited legend of Te Mata Peak portrays the hill as the prostrate body of the Waimarama chief Te Mata. Te Mata is a tāonga tuku ihō (heavenly gift) etched from the earth by the gods and accorded many names such as Te Matā, Te Mata o Rongokako, Te Karanemanema o te Mata o Rongokako.
