The name of the island Te Hauturu-o-Toi means "the resting place of lingering breezes" Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1897. The island is an extinct andesitic stratovolcano, about 6 km across, with an area of 28 km2. Its earliest volcanic activity is estimated to have occurred 3 million years ago and the latest 1.2 million years ago. Its highest point is Mt Hauturu at 722 above sea level.
