Day 28 'Threatened, Endangered, Extinct'
The red wolf (Canis rufus) is a canine native to the southeastern United States. Its size is intermediate between the coyote (Canis latrans) and gray wolf (Canis lupus). Red wolves, like all wolves, were viewed as a threat to both livestock and big game, so they were killed through government-sponsored, intensive predator control programs that resulted in the near extinction of the species. In fact, red wolves were wiped out in all but a very small portion of their range in Texas and Louisiana. It wasn’t until 1962 that concerns were raised about the potential loss of the entire species. In 1969, the government took positive action, starting a captive breeding program to save red wolves.
